Questions & Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you want to know before you call — answered honestly and without judgment.
Is this hotline really free?
Yes, completely. There is no charge to call, and we will never ask for payment or insurance information. Our service is free to anyone who needs it.
Will my call be kept confidential?
Yes. Everything you share is confidential. We only break confidentiality in the rare situation where there is imminent risk of harm to you or someone else — a legal requirement in all states.
What is the difference between this hotline and 988?
988 is the national Suicide & Crisis Lifeline specifically designed for people in immediate suicidal crisis. Our hotline helps with a broader range of mental health concerns — anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship stress, substance use — and connects you with ongoing treatment options, not just crisis intervention.
Do I need to be in crisis to call?
No. You don't have to be in crisis to reach out. Many people call because they feel overwhelmed, anxious, or are struggling day-to-day and aren't sure where to turn. That is exactly what we are here for.
What happens when I call?
A trained counselor answers, listens to what you are going through, and asks questions to understand your situation. They then help you identify appropriate next steps — whether that is a therapist, a treatment program, a support group, or another resource.
Can you help me find a therapist or treatment program?
Yes. One of our main goals is to connect callers with the right professional support. We can help you find therapists, psychiatrists, outpatient programs, and residential treatment facilities based on your location and insurance.
What if I do not have insurance?
We help people with and without insurance. Many community mental health centers offer sliding-scale fees, and there are federally funded programs that provide free care. We can help identify what is available in your area.
Can I call for someone else — a family member or friend?
Absolutely. Many calls come from concerned loved ones. We can help you understand what your family member may be experiencing and guide you on how to have supportive conversations and find appropriate resources for them.
Are your counselors licensed mental health professionals?
Our counselors are trained in mental health first aid and crisis support. For clinical assessment and ongoing therapy, we connect callers with licensed professionals in their area.
How quickly will someone answer?
Our average wait time is under 2 minutes. We are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays.
